History

Curling in Springfield started in 1943 when a small group of curling enthusiasts were given permission to build a one-sheet curling ice on the current site owned by the Springfield Ag society. By 1946, interest had increased enough to add a second sheet and form a small local club. Over the next 2 years interest expanded throughout the municipality and by 1948, the Springfield Curling Club was born.

By 1960, curling had become very popular with membership increasing every year, so the building of a new curling rink was agreed upon. Club members travelled throughout the municipality selling $100.00 shares to raise money for the new club. In total, 137 shares were sold and the new 4-sheet curling club was constructed. In 1969 the club was insulated making a more comfortable playing area, and in 1973 artificial ice was put in . In 1990, a new clubhouse replaced the old one attached to the ice area.

Happy Curling Day in Canada! Springfield Curling Club opened its doors this morning at 9:30 am with an intro to curling session that saw all our sheets full of new curlers! Numerous other sessions ran throughout the day and were well attended. The Big shoot out was held after lunch (Lorna's famous Slider burgers) at 1:00pm. There was representation from all leagues and it was a blast. We had 5 pins total in the 30 minute period. Pins were made by: Deb Shaver, Diane Goodbrandson, Peter Wolfe, Mack Smith and Cliff Thompson
